Who Said You Have To Do It Alone?! : Mentoring 101
Take a second and think back to your younger days. Do you remember when you first learned to drive? How about when you wanted to get your first job? Or even when you received your first acceptance letter to college? These were things that seemed to be the most easily to achieve but in reality they can be quite tricky to figure out! Those are the times that a mentor would have come in handy. A mentor is your “go to” person. One that can provide assistance in a number of areas or at least support you if they don’t know the “how to.”
Professional vs. Personal
In many workplaces today, you will find some sort of mentoring program. Employers use them as a way to “train” the newbie and assess his/her strengths and weaknesses, to better place them. Having one is a great way to learn the ropes, meet new people, and help build your resume or get acclimated with the culture of the office. They serve as an asset to you should you run into a problem on a project because they usually have tons of resources at their fingertips!
You may personally come across someone that you look up to in a sorority, or fraternity, at school or perhaps even a girl’s scout troop. Since this is on a more intimate level they may be more equipped to assist you in financial matters or problems at home. A lot of personal mentors blend with the professional side since they too often assist in resume building, job searching and valuable introductions.
How to find the perfect mentor
Figuring out a way to pursue a mentor might be your biggest challenge but it’s not impossible to do. At work, a great way to engage someone is to collaborate on a project that is of interest to the both of you. This will allow for plenty of interaction and along the way you’ll have the opportunity to see things you may (or may not) have in common. On the personal side of things there’s always the option of joining an organization to take part in for leisure activity. This would again, extend the potential to meet someone new and form that relationship with.
Maintaining your mentorship
Once you’ve found your match your goal is to keep it! It’s very important to set goals and expectations you both agree on in your mentorship. With these you have boundaries and a mutual understanding of what you want to come from the experience. Never use this person as a slingshot way to get you the promotion you dreamt of at work or an opportunity to complain about things that aren’t going your way. Instead, share success stories with them, be that constant support they may need through trying times. After all, everyone needs someone they can depend on!

Ariana White is a recent graduate of Sacred Heart University. There she earned a Master of Arts Degree in Corporate Communication and Public Relations. She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Communication from Eastern Connecticut State University. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Ariana has been trained for any leadership role and specializes in socialization. As a new member of BPRSNY, she looks forward to getting involved with the communication committee but most of all meeting tons of new people.
